Emma Ford has been flying hawks since she was eight. In 1982 she and her husband established the British school of Falconry, which now has branches in Scotland and Vermont, USA. She is a member of the Scottish Hawk Board, the government advisory panel on captive hawks. She has written five other books on falconry, as well as a humorous autobiography and Countrywoman, based on a television series in which she was the subject of one programme.

Eleanor Stickney's enthusiasm for birds hatched from her great, great uncle, who was one of the founders of the American Ornithologists Union, and her grandfather, who was an amateur ornithologist. Mrs. Stickney majored in ornithology at Sarah Lawrence College and worked at the American Museum of Natural history. Along with S. Dillon Ripley, she founded the Peabody Museum Associates and was its first President. She also spent 30 years as Collections Manager of the Bird Department at Yale University's Peabody Museum of Natural History. Mrs. Stickney, now retired, still gives frequent, sought after lectures on ornithology. She and her husband presently reside in Essex, Connecticut.
