Handbook of the Birds of Europe, the Middle East, and North America
de Stanley Cramp(Ed. Oxford Univ Pr) Isbn : 0195210689
247.01 €
Volumes VI and VII of this beautifully illustrated and authoritative eight-volume reference work are worthy additions to the most comprehensive guide to the birds of the Western Palearctic available. Taking into account the great advances made in ornithology since the publication of the seminal Handbook of British Birds (1941)--which for many years provided the foundation on which the field was built--the eight volumes together will contain descriptions of over 760 species of birds, of which about 600 are breeding species. Each breeding species is described in detail in sections devoted to field characteristics, habitat, distribution, mortality and longevity, population (with maps showing breeding and wintering areas), social pattern and behavior, breeding, food, voice, plumages, moults, m...

A Shadow and a Song: The Struggle to Save an Endangered Species
de Mark Jerome Walters(Ed. Chelsea Green Publishing Co) Isbn : 093003158X
20.86 €
Twenty years ago this reviewer saw dozens of dusky seaside sparrows in the tidal marshes near Cape Canaveral, Florida. Now they are extinct. Using extensive documentation, including interviews, library research, and site visits, Walters sensitively tells how extinction occurred. His is a poignant, beautifully written book that reads like a good mystery, although we know the conclusion at the start. Manipulation of water levels by NASA, developers, mosquito controllers, and the U.S. Fish Wildlife Services (for the benefit of ducks) did in the sparrow. Arrayed against these bureaucratic villains are the book's heroes, a handful of mostly young professional biologists who documented the sparrows' ecological needs and predicted what was going to happen to them every step of the way. Even the...

Australian Birds of Prey: The Biology and Ecology of Raptors
de Penny Olsen(Ed. Johns Hopkins University Press) Isbn : 0801853575
41.93 €
Too bad for those who think that this fine title has too narrow a focus. Olsen (Australian National Univ.) covers the raptors of Australia very well but deals primarily with universal subjects even as she draws mainly from examples of that continent. General chapters concern raptor basics, ecology, predation, reproduction, health, study methods, interactions with humans, and conservation. An attractive format with elegant charts and tables as well as 250 spectacular color photos combine to make this a stunning monograph, well referenced and authoritative. Because its focus is more cosmopolitan, Scott Weidensaul's Raptors (LJ 3/15/96) is a better selection for most general libraries, but larger institutions should also acquire Olsen's marvelous, large-format book. It is a beauty.Henry Tucke...

Important Bird Areas in Guinea-Bissau
de Tim Dodman(Ed. Wetlands International) Isbn : 9058820238
25.32 €
This work provides a comprehensive account of ten key areas of Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in Guinea-Bissau, which together cover around one third of the surface area of the country. This demonstrates the high importance of Guinea-Bissau for birds. The coastline in particular, with its mangroves, estuaries, islands and floodplains, is of great international importance for waterbirds. The Bijagos Archipelago alone seasonally supports close to one million migratory waders. All of the ten sites are described in detail with supporting data, and where possible, site maps are provided along with conservation recommendations. The site descriptions are preceded by an introduction to both the IBA process and to Guinea-Bissau, and a synopsis of threats to biodiveristy at the national level. The anne...

Molecules in the Stellar Environment: Proceedings of Iau Colloquium No. 146 Held at Copenhagen, Denmark, May 24-29, 1993
de (Ed. Springer Verlag) Isbn : 0387577475
82.6 €
This volume gives and excellent survey of our present knowledge of molecular processes in stellar and proto-stellar objects. It reviews molecular physics in stellar environments and is intended to bridge the gap between astrophysicists and chemists. The topics range from the theoretical to the computational and include observational data. Among the topics treated are questions of stellar evolution, the determination of physical properties and structures , and the chemical composition of stellar protospheres. Opacity is studied in the context of various types of stellar and proto-stellar objects.
