Rock Ptarmigan are the northernmost of the grouse species, and found in both northern North America and in northern Eurasia, although there are several different races.This painting shows a male in full winter plumage, snow white, except for a bit of a black mask, black beak, dark eyes, and some black in the tail and on the shafts of the primary wing feathers. Le lagopède alpin constitue l'espèce la plus nordique de la famille des tétraonidés. On le trouve à la fois dans le Nord de l'Amérique du Nord et du vieux continent, bien qu'il y ait de nombreuses sous-espèces. Ce tableau montre un mâle en plumage d'hiver. il est pratiquement tout blanc, excepté une partie du masque, les yeux et le bec qui sont noir. Un peu de noir est également visible sur la queue et sur les rémiges primaires
