To See Every Bird on Earth

To See Every Bird on Earth
de Dan Koeppel(Ed. Recorded Books) Isbn : 1419332996
28.49 €
John McDonough's well-known scholarly voice has less than stellar material to work with in Koeppel's relentless memoir of his unsatisfying relationship with his father. Although ornithology and bird-watching make up some of the text, most of the content focuses on the dysfunctional marriage of Koeppel's parents. McDonough ably recites passages on birding, but his usually reassuring voice is noticeably discomfited when having to read narrative on Richard Koeppel's post-divorce "encounters." McDonough gives a solid performance, but the repetitive nature of the text does not allow him to display the full range of his talents. John James Audubon: On the Wing

John James Audubon: On the Wing
de Odyssey Publications(Ed. Odyssey Publications) Isbn : 9622176844
11.36 €
John James Audubon's love of the backwoods and his passion for drawing led him to become America's foremost artist-naturalist. His major work, The Birds of America, is as stunning today as it was more than 100 years ago. This book in the Icon Series uses Audubon's illustrations and paintings, together with other visual material and text, to document the life and achievements of one of America's most influential illustrators and de facto environmentalists. But he was no studio-bound artist nor did he have any formal artistic training. Audubon plied flat boats down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, hunted with the Shawnee, and spent much of his time as a woodsman. Wherever he went he felt compelled to sketch and paint the natural wealth and beauty of his beloved America. Plagued by bad luck, ...

Had I the Wings: The Friendship of Bachman and Audubon
de Jay Shuler(Ed. University of Georgia Press) Isbn : 082032079X

John James Audubon's friendships were often stressful and short-lived, but his personal and professional relationship with John Bachman of Charleston, South Carolina, was a notable exception. Bachman (1790-1874), a Lutheran pastor and gifted amateur zoologist, first met Audubon in 1831; they immediately became friends and collaborators and eventually in-laws (both Audubon sons wed Bachman daughters). Their major work was The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America (1845-49), with Bachman's text and Audubon's paintings, but Bachman also provided specimens and data for Birds of America (1827-38). Shuler has produced a well-written and fully researched biography of Bachman, the first since 1888, emphasizing his scientific contributions and the Audubon friendship; it is recommended for natural ...
