The Migrations of Hawks

The Migrations of Hawks
de Donald S. Heintzelman(Ed. Indiana University Press) Isbn : 0253338212
35.1 €
Heintzelman has been studying hawk migration for over 25 years, and has published extensively on the topic; this monograph summarizes what is currently known about hawk migration patterns and the factors that affect them in North and Central America and the West Indies. The text is divided into four sections covering history and methodology, important observation sites, the influence of weather, and geographic and demographic factors. Scientifically rigorous long-term data are available from so few sites that most of the author's conclusions are necessarily tentative, but some reasonably clear patterns do emerge. Though written for a scientific audience, the book will also be valuable to advanced amateur birders and to falconers. The comprehensive bibliography is a valuable reference tool ...

The Geese of Beaver Bog

The Geese of Beaver Bog
de Bernd Heinrich(Ed. Harper Perennial) Isbn : 0060957387
14.2 €
Heinrich, naturalist and author of Winter World (2003) and Mind of the Raven (1999), raised a baby Canada goose to adulthood, at which point she flew south with her compatriots. Two years later, she returned with a mate in tow and set up housekeeping on a beaver pond near the author's house. The trust that Peep, Heinrich's goose, showed for the author allowed him to intimately observe the details of the pair's lives. The author describes battles over real estate, mate swapping, and the tender attentions of parents to new goslings. The other denizens of the marsh also get their due, as Heinrich discovers the nests of song sparrows, red-winged blackbirds, and rose-breasted grosbeaks. Underlying the engaging, personal nature of the narrative is Heinrich's scientific background, and the reader...

The Bird of Light

The Bird of Light
de John Hay(Ed. WW Norton Co) Isbn : 0393029956
15.83 €
Hay, the author of 11 other well-crafted books ( The Immortal Wilderness , LJ 12/86; The Undiscovered Country , LJ 6/1/82; etc.), writes about terns. Relatives of gulls, these birds are unbelievably buoyant, graceful fliers whose food is small fish, caught by plunge-diving head first into water. Set in Cape Cod, Hay's book centers on the spring arrival of terns, their courtship, breeding, feeding habits, fall departures, and winter life. For Hay, the world of terns is an effective microcosm, good for musings and philosophy on the health of the biosphere, the state of the world, and the human condition. His ruminations are strengthened by scientific counsel gleaned from his friendships with world authorities on terns. Excellent writing, good science, and fine reading.- Henry T. Armistead, T...
